Laser specific energy consumption: How do laser systems compare to other manufacturing processes?

Laser material interactions are routinely praised for their selective processing and high rates. However, this does not guarantee that the total manufacturing system has a low energy intensity compared to conventional processes. This paper presents results of collaborative UK China research project improve comprehension consumption carbon emissions laser-based manufacturing. A range individual laser cutting, welding, cleaning processes were studied assess efficiency, including its ancillary subsystems (e.g., cooling extraction). The developed systematic analysis method, adapted from BS ISO 14955-1:2017, which incorporated time subsystem level studies quantify all components system. Previous identified system's most significant contributor auxiliary or supporting subsystems, emission. using only absorbed radiation evaluate efficiency is misleading. All evaluated followed negative correlation between rate (kg/h) specific (J/kg). new data conclude have relatively alternatives. can be used identify where improvements systems made. comprehensive comparison allows manufacturers select environmental impact.
